| Description |
English: This memorial was raised in 1963 in Hvalba. It was made by father and son: Helmuth and Lars Larsen from Tórshavn. Hvalba is a village in the northern part of Suðuroy island, which is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. The memorial is not only a "Lost-at-Sea-Memorial" but also in memory of people from Hvalba, who died by accident in the coal mines or by falling down a cliff or mountain around the village or on Lítla Dímun, the smallest of the Faroe Islands, which is located just east of Hvalba. Other accident victims i.e. who died in a car accident are also mentioned on the memorial. The drowning accidents are both single events like drowning accidents on the fjord of Hvalba but also larger accidents where a boat or ship never returned. Hvalba lost 10 men in spring 1920 when the motorboat Helena went missing. Four years later , in spring 1924 Hvalba lost 12 men when General Gordon went missing. Hvalba and Sandvík lost 14 men in a boat accident in the so-called "Skaðagrindin í Sandvík" on 13 February 1915, when two boats were destroyed by pilot whales in the bay of Sandvík while the boats tried to gather the whales into the bay. Some of the men who are mentioned lost their lives because of World War II.

Av øðrum vannlukkum kunnu nevnast vannlukkur í kolanámunum, menn sum duttu oman á Lítlu Dímun ella í bjørgunum ella fjøllunum í Hvalba ella nærindis. |
