| Description | Today is a day to remember those US service men and women who lost their lives in service to the US. It is an extension of various Decoration Days begun in the Southern US during and after the War Between the States and eventually was formalized as a national holiday. The use of the term Memorial Day had changed over time and was eventually also officially changed. My dad always called it Decoration Day. It was created to be on May 30th but was changed to the last Monday of May. Presumably to not interfere with the business week. This is also recognized as the start of the summer season. A very busy tourist weekend here in Maine. |
