Description
English: Memorial Church at Cawnpore. Illustration for The Illustrated London News, 26 September 1868.

The massacre of the English garrison in the boats at the Suttie Chowra Ghaut of Cawnpore, on June 27, 1857, and the still more atrocious slaughter of the women and children, on July 15 of that year, are events, never to be forgotten. A Gothic monument, with an allegorical statue designed by Marochetti, has been erected in the public gardens, over the well into which the dead bodies of those slain on the second occasion were thrown by order of Nana Sahib. The more active promoters, however, of these hideous murders were his brother, Bala Sahib, Azeemollah Khan, and Tantia Topee, the captain of his guard. The English Episcopal church at Cawnpore having been destroyed in the siege, a new church was built, and completed not long ago, which is a memorial of the terrible fate of so many of our countrymen eleven years ago. We present an Illustration of this sacred edifice, which is substantial, handsome, and convenient. The importance of Cawnpore as a station of the Bengal army, and the number and respectability of the European residents there, secure a large congregation.
