The defence was abrave one, and the enemy maintained it as long as possible;but all advancing to the charge, the defenders broke fromtheir guns, and the battery was gained: one of the gunners,more resolute than the rest, ran back, linstock in hand, togive the last shot.f Captain Lamb, within a few yards dis-tance, discovered him as he advanced, and twice snappedhis fusee at him as he made the attempt; but the primingbeing wetted with the snow, failed to explode; and in theact of priming for the third effort, the cannon was dis-charged.! A grape shot hit Lamb on the left cheek, nearthe eye, and carried away part of the bone; the force of theblow and the concussion of the shot, stunned him, and threwhim senseless upon the snow.
