In den 1970er-Jahren haben Feministinnen wie Silvia Federici Reproduktionsarbeit ins Zentrum politischer Diskussion gerückt: meist unbezahlte Tätigkeiten im Haushalt, Sorgearbeit sowie Mutterschaft sind konstitutiv für eine kapitalistische Produktionsweise, werden jedoch als Ausdruck von Weiblichkeit naturalisiert und entpolitisiert. Im transnationalen Kapitalismus übernehmen zunehmend Migrantinnen diese schlecht bezahlten Haus- und Pflegdienstleistungen. Mit den Reproduktions- und Biotechnologien treten neue Weisen hinzu, wie der reproduktive Geschlechterkörper zur Ware wird. Melinda Cooper analysiert die Tätigkeiten von Frauen, die Eizellen oder Embryonen zur Verfügung stellen, als Arbeit, um deren ökonomische Relevanz sichtbar zu machen. Sie knüpft damit an die feministisch-marxistische Diskussion um Reproduktionsarbeit an. Silvia Federici und Melinda Cooper diskutieren, wie sich die Reproduktionsbedingungen von Arbeit und Leben im Neoliberalismus verändern.
