Title
Medieval zoomorphic strap mount, dog/bear head.
Description
English: Medieval cast copper alloy belt mount in the form of a crude stylised animal head (dog or bear?). Head in plan, slightly domed, concave in the centre of the reverse. The back of the head is decorated with incised cross-hatching, the brows, eyes and slighly upturned snout are picked out in straight filed lines. Separate copper alloy rivet off-centre through the top of the head, just behind the brow, with a sub-circular rove at the terminal and a rectangular rove behind that; a strip of copper alloy (length 8mm, width 3.5mm, thickness 0.7mm) is positioned at the top of the rivet (at the top of the concavity), and extends outside the mount, at the left cheek, where it may have been snapped - the terminal is rounded by slightly rough, so this is unclear. The strip and rectangular rove may indicate repair. Fine dark green patina. Length 13.11mm, width 10.5mm, thickness including rivet 7.0mm, thickness not including rivet c.3.5mm, weight 1.54g. See Griffiths, Philpott & Egan 2007 (Meols, Oxford University) Pl.20, p119, no.s 1129-1131 for similar mounts, gievn a broad dating of 1050-1550.
