Title
Medieval zoomorphic padlock
Description
English: A medieval copper alloy zoomorphic barb-spring (barrel) padlock, comprising a hollow cast body in the form of a horse, the legs of which are all incomplete. At the back of the horse are three apertures all of which are filled with corrosion, and the front has a large asymmetrical opening also filled with corrosion, all for the missing bolt. The horse has cast details including ears, a saddle, and the hames or collar round the chest but the face is very worn. Cf. an incomplete example from a 12th-early 13th century context in Winchester (Biddle, 1990) no.3665 and some Norfolk finds, from Besthorpe (HER 33184), Billingford (HER 7206) and Seething (HER 40302). Another example, from Awarton, Suffolk, was considered Romano-British (Martin et al. Proc. Suffolk. Inst. Archaeol. 38 (1996), fig. 98 A, with reference to one more from the villa at Rockbourne, Hants). The other examples on the database are DENO-45B8B6, SWYOR-DA4617, NMS-1F3472, NMS-D562B4, LVPL-1E8DF7, NMS-3C0C96, and NLM-5CBA15. The padlock is 42.99mm long, 16.97mm wide and 28.43mm thick. It weighs 30.25g.
