Title |
Medieval vessel handle |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy right-angled drop-handle from a chafing dish of probable late medieval date (c. AD 1350-1600).
The main shaft has an octagonal section. There is a central knop formed of a bifacially-bevelled segment between two raised collars. On one corner of the handle is a sub-conical knop, probably representing an acorn. This is missing from the other corner, there are marks suggestive of an old break. The handle has attachment lugs held in place by detachable terminals with a zoomorphic form, possibly a dog or rabbit head, the mouth of which is formed by a drilled hole which accomodates the shaft of the handle. The lugs are freely movable, and are circular in form, 18.8 mm diameter, with bevelled edges and a shoulder before a circular rivet. An incomplete and repaired example of a very similar handle is described by Egan (1998: 175, fig. 143) who suggests a date range of the 14th-16th centuries. Overall length154.2 mm, width 64.4, thickness 9.6 Weight 157.5 |
