Title |
Medieval vessel |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy spout from a vessel such as an ewer, dating from the late medieval or Early Post Medieval period. This date is supported by the findspot on Towton Battlefield, which may suggest a date of 1461. The spout is in the form of a zoomorphic head, probably a dog, holding a tube in it's jaws. There is a notched ridge along the centre of the dog's head. The head is very angular and the eyes are not depicted on this example,. The attachment end where the spout was fixed to the vessel is unusual. Instead of a curving oval area which would have matched the wall of the vessel, the rear of this example arches and divides into two prongs with a concave area between them. This is different to all the examples on the database. It is difficult to see how this spout was attached and to what sort of vessel. It is possible it was fixed to a leather bottle or similar. |
