Title
Medieval to post-medieval vessel mount
Description
English: A zoomorphic copper-alloy mount from the handle of a late medieval to early post-medieval sheet metal vessel. A similar mount, attached to a handle, was found in excavations in London (G. Egan; 1998; pp. 175). A date of 14th to 16th century is suggested. The function of such objects was to hold the handle to the vessel.

The mount takes the form of a dog's head. The back two thirds are of oval section, whilst the front third angles downwards towards the nose and mouth, the front edge of which is vertical. A circular aperture passes horizontally from the back of the piece to the front, gradually decreasing in diameter; the handle of the metal vessel would originally have slotted into this opening. Three angled indentations on one side of the head, and one on the other, are probably designed to depict the animal's ears. There is a pronounced brow ridge and two poorly incised lentoid eyes. A small vertical groove probably represents one of the nostrils. The mouth is shown by a pair of diverging grooves on each side of the head and by the small circular aperture which marks the front of the internal socket.

The object measures 20.25mm long, 12.95mm wide and 15.24mm high. The weight is 18.26g.
