Title
Medieval to post-medieval rectangular double-looped buckle
Description
English: A worn and incomplete cast pewter rectangular double-looped buckle of late medieval or early post-medieval date. This plain buckle has a flat lower surface; the upper surface is straight internally and bevelled externally giving it a triangular cross-section. In section, however, the pin bar is the shape of a square with rounded corners; the pin is missing. On one of the corners of one of the loops has been bent upwards as a result of old damage. Whitehead (1996, 74) notes the manufacture of rectangular buckles in cast pewter in the 15th and 16th centuries.
