Title
Medieval to Post Medieval candlestick
Description
English: A cast copper alloy cup from a candlestick dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval periods, circa AD1300-1600. The candlestick cup is circular in plan. It is a hollow cylinder in form with a funnel at one end. The cup is decorated with 3 traverse ridges. There is a ridge with a narrow groove at the open end of the cup. A second ridge is at the centre of the cup with 2 narrow grooves to either side. A third ridge is at the bottom of the cup. At the bottom of the cup, the sides narrow gradually towards the shaft. There is a small step between the narrowed sides of the cup and shaft. The shaft is circular in cross section with a diameter of 5.66mm. The end of the shaft does not appear to have been broken, suggesting that the complete candlestick would have had composite parts. There is a small hole on one side of the cup and the surfaces of the object are worn and scratched. The damage is not new and was probably caused by movement in the plough soil. The candlestick cup has an uneven dark and light green patina.

Diameter: 19.84mm. Length: 37.11mm. Weight: 23.53g.

A more complete example of a comparable candlestick is recorded under reference NMS-8ED0A7
