Title
Medieval to Post-Medieval lead decorated spindle whorl
Description
English: A lead spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval to post medieval period. This artefact weighs 46.75g (1.65oz). The central circular perforation has a diameter of 9.4mm. The artefact is circular in shape with a maximum diameter of 30.0mm. The perforation through the whorl is cylindrical in shape, however the middle is slightly concave. The whorl has a sub-oval cross section with a slightly flattened circumferance. This flattened circumferance accounts for 5.9mm of the total depth. The depth of the artefact measures 9.9mm. The surface appears to be fairly smooth but there is evidence of patterning on one side of the central girth. This patterning is probably punch stamped or possibly moulded, of triangle shapes which are unclear and worn smooth. It is unclear whether this worn decoration may have been present on both sides. These shallow decorative features measure approximately 2.8mm. There is an area of damage on the outside circumferance of two deep grooved crossed lines. One line is 13.1mm long and the other is 8.9mm. The depth of the groove is approximately 2.7mm.
