Title |
Medieval to Post-Medieval decorated lead spindle whorl |
||
Description |
English: A lead spindle whorl probably dating from the medieval to post medieval period. This artefact weighs 41.66g (1.47oz). Looking down on the central circular perforation which has a diameter of 7.9mm, this artefact is circular in shape with a maximum diameter of 25.3mm. The perforation through the artefact is cylindrical and slightly concave. The whorl has an oval cross-section. The depth of the whorl measures 13.8mm. The surface is covered with scratches and indentations. On the outer surface there is evidence of a decorative lozenge shape pattern formed of triangles, probably punch stamped or possibly moulded, that are set back-to-back in pairs. A single circular line of patterning appears on either side of the girth. Some of this patterning is now unclear due to later damage. These shallow decorative features measure approximately 3.1mm. One side of the outer edge of the whorl appears to have been sheared off to a length of 14.6mm and a depth of 9.7mm and has many diagonal scratch marks. This area of damage reduces the diameter of the artefact to 23.4mm. |
