Title |
Medieval strap end |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete Medieval white-metal coated strap-end consisting of socket, waist and “lyre-shaped” openwork main part. On the front of the socket the sacred monogram ihs in black-letter is picked out by engraved lines on a transversely engraved ground, to be viewed with the main part pointing downwards. Two iron rivets are driven through the top of the inscription. In the centre of the “lyre” element the figure of St Christopher holding the Boy Jesus on his shoulders stands between two apertures. His feet are missing. Moulded roundels flank the sides, which are decorated on the front with pairs of obliquely engraved lines. Apart from this last detail the object is very similar to two examples, from Kidwelly Castle and London, illustrated by Fingerlin 1971 (Abb. 274-5, Kat Nr. 62 and 282). Length >57.5mm. Width 39mm. Width at attachment edge 23.5mm. Socket width 20mm, thickness 3.5mm. Late 14th / early 15th century. |
