Title |
Medieval strap end |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper alloy composite lyre-shaped buckle plate. The plate is flat with a broken openwork lower end around the area where pin may have been secured. All that survives of this openwork section are two crescentric bars, one having a further scroll-like section beneath it. The face of the plate has a 3mm wide plain border with two circular rivet holes in it. One hole is empty and the other contains a copper alloy rivet. The central field of the strap end is decorated with a pressed scene depicting St Christopher carrying the Christ Child over the river. St Christopher appears to be wearing a tunic and his head looks to his left. On his shoulders sits the Christ child with both arms outstreched and bent upwards. Christs' head has a halo around. There are two trees in the distant background, one either side of the central figures. The reverse of the strap end has a broken backplate. |
