Title
Medieval spindle whorl
Description
English: A lead alloy spindle whorl dating from about AD 850 - 1600. It is of Coppergate Form A1, having one flat face. The other face is convex with straoight sides between. The central aperture tapers from 12.6mm at the flat face to 9.8mm. There is no cavity in the side wall. The lead has a smooth cream coloured patina. Whorls of Form A1 were used from the 6th century onwards, but the large central hole could indicate a date range from the later Anglo-Saxon period onwards (Walton Rogers, 2007, p 25).
