Title |
Medieval single loop buckle and plate |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Medieval cast copper alloy single loop D-shaped buckle frame with attached plate, c. 1200-c. 1500 AD. The remains consist of a complete buckle frame and nearly complete buckle plate; the pin and plate rivets are missing. The buckle frame is oval in cross section with a widened and slightly thickened outer edge and a narrowed and offset strap bar with small knops to either end. A shallow groove exists in the frame front edge on which the pin would rest. The frame measures 20.53mm long, 40.79 mm wide and is a maximum of 4.19 mm thick. The plate is fashioned from a copper alloy sheet folded over the strap bar. The two halves of the plate were symmetrical and semi-circular with rounded corners. The bottom half is fractured with rough breaks across the two external rivet holes. There is a distorted rectangular pin slot. The top of the plate is complete with the three rivet holes intact; the circular rivets are missing. Traces of gilding remain on the outer surface of the buckle assemblage. The plate measures 21.07 mm long, 39.23mm wide and 1.12mm thick. The frame and plate weigh a total of 13.20 grams. Egan and Pritchard (1991, p68, Plate 42, No. 271) illustrate a very similar example without a plate in contexts dated to c. 1200-1230; they suggest this is a long-lived form, which was easily produced throughout an extended period of time. Whitehead (2003, p19) dates similar D-shaped buckles with simple buckle plates to mainly c. 1250-1500 AD. For a similar example on the PAS database, cf. SUSS-24E1C3. |
