Title |
Medieval silver and niello finger ring |
||
Description |
English: Medieval ring; Silver finger ring of probable 12th century date. Large ring formed of a thin, flat band of rounded rectangular cross-section which expands at the front into three thinner, flat, oval bezels. The bezels each show an equal-armed cross with short, stubby, flaring arms. There are remains of niello inlay around all three crosses. The band of the ring has incised lines separating each bezel from the rest of the ring and there are an extra two incised lines at the either end of the row of three bezels. The band of the ring has a rough area at the back which suggests that the ring has either been expanded or has broken and been mended at some time in the past. The patina on the silver at the interior face of two of the bezels shows cracks, which look recent. The ring is somewhat bent out of shape. |
