Title |
Medieval seal matrix (reversed for readability) |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Medieval cast lead personal seal matrix, probably from the 13th century AD. The incised design consists of a small cross with expanded arms, with a dot in each quadrant and a further dot beyond the end of each arm. This is surrounded by a grooved border. Part of the inscription is now missing, but what remains can be read as , +........I: BARkER with three dots filling the space at the end of the inscription. The fragment of the last missing letter of the first name has a curve suggesting that it may be a D, with the most likely first name being Ricardi (Richard).
The reverse of the seal has a broken attachment loop, of which only a small protrusion remains, and is decorated with a cast relief fleur-de-lis design. It measures 27.6 mm in diameter, 6.6 mm thick and weighs 10.2 g. |
