Title
Medieval seal matrix, bird motif and inscription LELSV
Description
English: Copper alloy loyalty seal matrix of the late thirteenth or fourteenth century. The die is hexagonal, 17-19mm in diameter and 21mm in length. Weight 7.35g.

Viewing an impression of the six-sided die, which is particularly well carved, the central motif is a six pointed star in the form of a raised moulding inside of which is a standing bird with folded wings facing left. The points of the star extend to the edges of the die and thus form six roughly lozenge-shaped fields. The upper-most field contains an initial mark, a six-pointed estoille. The other five fields contain the letters of a Latin inscription LELSV which might be interpreted as “I am loyal”. The letters are in Lombardic style. On the reverse it is hexagonally faceted and rises to a triple collar and then a flat trefoil terminal with a central perforation which is about 2mm in diameter. The seal matrix is in good condition and has a dark green patina.
