Title
Medieval seal
Description
English: Lead object, probably originally of pointed-oval shape and probably a seal matrix of Medieval date, 1200-1400.

There is considerable damage and wear to the inscription and the face of the seal. Much of the edge is missing and it is difficult to reconstruct the original appearance of the object. The central motif is illegible and, of the inscription, only the engraved letters (in reverse) [damage]ER...LL...[damage] are legible.

The object is slightly concave as well as being thin, flimsy, uneven, and poorly made. There is no evidence for suspension, although this could have been lost along with other parts of the edge. Despite this, it is more likely to have been a seal matrix (or trial-piece for a seal matrix) than anything else.
