Title
Medieval ring brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy, medieval ring brooch. The brooch has a decorated lozenge shaped frame with a simple pin formed from a tapering strip of copper alloy wrapped around a narrowed section in the frame (at one of the lozenge angles). The brooch has delicate cast decoration on the front and evidence that the surface was gilded. On each point of the lozenge there is a four petaled flower. The reverse of the brooch also has some decoration; this appears to be the remains of an inscription, a medieval letter A can be seen at one apex but the rest is quite worn. Ring brooches sometimes had religious inscriptions.

The brooch weighs 2.35g and measures 23.8mm in length, 17.1mm in width and 2.2mm in thickness. The ring brooch gained widespread popularity in the 13th century. Two similar examples can be seen in Baileys 'Buttons and Fasteners - 500BC - AD 1840' Page 103, Fig 13.6 (this is a silver gilded example) and page 110, Fig.3.47.
