Title
Medieval rectangular plate buckle (reverse)
Description
English: Medieval Buckle, most of frame and distal end of pin missing, remarkably decorated rectangular plate. The probably oval frame has an offset, narrowed bar that protrudes and is thickened at the sides (bar length 29mm). Pin with shallow transversely engraved line near loop. The plate, with pin slot and frame recesses, is secured by two rivets with large globular heads (diameter 5.5mm). The front and rear parts are of the same width (28mm), but the former is slightly longer (23mm) and has a concave attachment edge. The decoration on the plate, carried out in tiny punched triangles and short obliquely engraved lines, is to be viewed with frame aligned upwards. It consists of four round-headed arches with capitals within a frame. The two outer capitals are attached to the frame. From the central one is suspended a palmette and from the flanking pair a leaf (both of which are largely obscured by the rivet heads). Late 12th – 13th century
