Title |
Medieval rectangular buckle plate with caged decoration |
||
Description |
English: Medieval rectangular buckle plate with caged decoration, sheet copper alloy with cast fittings. A most elaborate piece made up of a number of elements; a sheet metal backing plate one end of which has been scrolled around to form a tube in the middle of which is a notch into which the buckle pin was fitted. The back of this plate was tinned or silvered. Secured to the backing plate by four copper alloy rivet is a sheet metal plate bearing the figure of a standing animal, its head thrown back and its tail curved, and recurved over its back. The nose, mouth and oval eye are shown but the animal lacks a chin, the face being a straight development from the neck. It appears that the legs and feet are poorly developed and the animal figure and its plain frame are silvered, the field around the animal being filled with lines of sharply cut incisions. On top of this plate is a cage-like structure now damaged but consisting of a frame which contains four, triangular sectioned bars linking the corners to a central boss which contains traces of a white setting. Further bosses were present in middle of each of the four sides. The four rivets which hold the elements together protrude above the top of the frame. Length 30.2mm, Width 22.9mm, Height 11.4mm, Thickness (sheet metal) 0.5mm, Mass 10.32g.
This buckle plate is identical to one from Stagsden, Bedford, BH-715066, which was discussed in detail by Finds Liaison Officer who recorded it making further comment superfluous. These elaborate objects must have originated from the same workshop. |
