Title
Medieval rectangular buckle (reverse)
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy rectangular frame from a medieval buckle. The frame has a narrowed bar. The widest side of the frame is opposite the bar, and the upper and lower sides of the frame are curved (convex) in plan. On the front of the frame, there is a median notch for the pin opposite the bar between parallel grooves at either side. There is also a parallel groove towards the top and bottom of the widest side of the frame. The curved sides have ribs towards the junctions with the other sides of the frame. The outside edge is bevelled on both the front and the reverse of the frame. The buckle has a well developed green patina. The frame is 21.6mm long, 17.3mm wide and 3.6mm thick. These are maximum dimensions. It has a mass of 3.67g. The buckle frame is similar to object 439 in "Dress Accessories1150-1450" (Egan, 2002, figure 61 and p97). Object 439 has a plate, but it is unclear if the frame described in this record originally had one. The frame is type C in the typological scheme published by Griffiths et al. (2007) in "Meols, the Archaeology of the North Wirrall Coast" (Fig 2.5.1). Object 439 in "Dress Accessories1150-1450" (Egan, 2002, ibid.) was found in a ceramic phase 11 context in London, which is dated to c.1350-c.1400. This is the most likely date for the buckle recorded here.
