Title |
Medieval purse frame |
||
Description |
English: A curved, cast copper-alloy fragment from the pendent frame of a late medieval or early post-medieval purse. The object is V-shaped in cross section, with one side thickened compared to the other. There is one clear sewing hole on the lower side of this fragment; it has probably broken at one end at another. It would have been through such holes that the frame was sewn to the fabric purse (Geake 2001, 43). On the outer side are incised diagonal double grooves decorating the frame in a series of 'X's: some of these retain niello. Between the 'X's are incised rockerarm zigzags. The cross-section of the artefact together with the absence of any inscription suggests that this was part of the frame from a Ward-Perkins (1940, 164) Type A1 purse. For similar examples see Read (2001, 130; refs. 907-909). This example now has a dark-green patina. The plain internal surface is covered in fine diagonal file marks. |
