Title |
Medieval purse frame, obverse |
||
Description |
English: A worn cast copper-alloy fragment, probably part of the frame of a late medieval or early post-medieval purse. The object is L-shaped in section until it tapers to a solid point. In shape it bends to form an angle of slightly more than ninety degrees at the end opposite the solid point. Assuming that this object is a purse frame, this shorter end would have been the attachment end where the frame would have met the purse bar. The object features a circular perforation on one of the sides. It would have been through such holes that the frame was sewn to the fabric purse (Geake 2001, 43). There are traces of incised diagonal lines, although no inscription, decorating the frame towards the bent end. It is assumed that the frame has been bent during old damage. The section of the artefact together with the absence of any inscription suggests that this was part of the frame from a Ward-Perkins (1940, 164) Type A1 purse. |
