Title
Medieval pin
Description
English: Incomplete and bent Medieval needle or pin-like object with round-section shank broken across a transverse aperture. The spherical head is surmounted by a loop (incomplete), surrounded by a median rib and separated from the shank by a collar. Probably a couching needle or ‘passe-corde’, enigmatic objects that may have been used for working coarse textile such as canvas or may have been merely decorative, hair-pins or bodkins. At least one example from Winchester is probably of the 12th century, but there is nothing in this one to suggest such an early date (Biddle 1990, 807-10, fig. 237. Length >84mm. Diameter of head 13.5mm. Diameter of shank at break 3.25mm
