Title
Medieval pilgrim badge of St. John of Bridlington
Description
English: An incomplete medieval lead alloy pilgrim badge of St. John of Bridlington. It depicts the upper chest of St John in clerical clothing behind a two tier scrolling banner reading 'Srnt Ion of/ Bridlinton" held up by two angels; the left hand angel survives complete but only the head and wings of the right angel have survived. St John neck and head are also missing. On the reverse there is a central casting seam and the catchplate; none of the pin survives. The badge now measures 27.7mm (length) x 35.1mm (width) x 4.0mm (thickness) and weighs 3.27g.

St John of Bridlington (1320-1379 AD) was a renowned healer and holy man in his lifetime; he became a saint in 1404 AD and was a popular saint in the first half of the 15th century, which is when this badge is likely to date to. Both Henry IV and Henry V were patrons of his shrine, and other Bridlington badges have been previously found in London (Spencer 1998, 195).
