Title
Medieval papal bulla of Pope Nicholas III, cut into a square
Description
English: A lead-alloy papal bulla of Pope Nicholas III (1277 - 1280), cut into a sub-rectangular piece.

The obverse retains the relief-moulded heads of St. Peter and St. Paul, who look inwards from the left and right hand sides respectively and are each surrounded by a beaded border. The legend above has been removed. The legend identifying the Pope, 'NICO/LAVS:/PP:(I)II:', occupies all of the reverse of the remaining piece. At the centre of the cut top edge is a hint of the vertical perforation.

Length: 26.5mm; width: 25.9mm; thickness: 4.4mm; weight: 28.47g.

Given the weight of the piece, it seems likely that this bulla was cut in order to create an ounce weight. Despite this re-use, it is noteworthy that the person who adapted it was careful to retain both the heads of the saints and the entire legend.
