Title
Medieval papal bulla
Description
English: A circular lead alloy papal bulla. One side has the inscription: "INNO/CENTIVS / PP III" indicating that this seal was on a document issued by Pope Innocent III, who held office in1198-1216. PP stands for 'Pastor Pastorum' or 'Shepherd of Shepherds'. The other side has the letters: "SPA [SPE]" at the top for St Paul and St Peter and depictions of the two saints facing each other below. They have halos formed of beading, and there is a beaded border, as there is on the other side. The bulla is bent and patinated. For similar examples see Saunders 2001. Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. Medieval catalogue part 3. p. 89 no: 1. This example is a bulla for Innocent II but is very similar. A more clear example on the database is WILT-9B90B5. The bulla has a diameter of 37.16mm, thickness 3.75mm, weight 36.46g. The eight other bullae of Innocent III on the PAS database (as of Jan 2010) are DUR-B72736, SF-75C3F8, NMS-796865, NMS-EFEA04, ESS-812B33, NMGW-E5B826, LANCUM-A09125, and NLM-A30BC1.
