Title |
Medieval papal bulla |
||
Description |
English: A medieval lead Papal bulla of Pope Innocent IV, whose papacy lasted from 1243 to 1254 AD. The obverse bears the legend INNO/CENTIVS/PP IIII within a border of pellets. PP stands for 'Pastor Pastorum' or 'Shepherd of Shepherds'. The faces of Saints Peter and Paul are depicted on the reverse, moulded in bas relief and each surrounded by a separate pellet border with a crozier between the two, and enclosed within a circumferencial border. Above the faces is the inscription SPASPE, an abbreviation for St. Paul and St. Peter. St. Paul is seen on the left looking right, with a long pointed beard, and St. Peter is on the right facing left. He has a rounded face, with beard and hair formed from pellets. The bulla measures 36.35mm in diameter, 4.16mm in thickness, and weighs 32.08g. Papal bullae were used as seals on official Papal documents to authenticate their provenance and authority. A similar bulla has been recorded from Collingham , Nottinghamshire(LVPL-B4B6A3). |
