Title
Medieval papal bulla
Description
English: Medieval Papal bulla, probably of Innocent III (1198-1216). The bulla is now quite heavily corroded with very little surface left. The obverse has very faint lettering surviving, consisting of .....INO/.....VS. The I is probably the final downstroke of an 'N'. The reverse is altogether better preserved, although still quite poor. This preserves the faint traces of the two apostles' heads, their surrounding pelleted aureoles and SPASPE above, again with part of the surrounding pelleted border. Identifying the identity of the issuing pope is difficult because of the condition of the bulla. However, the surviving lettering seems to indicate INNO/CENTIVS, the combination of visible lettering not being suitable for any other pope. The reverse die used indicates that the Innocent in question must be either Innocent III, IV, V or VI, but Innocents V and VI used a different form of N on the obverse. The lettering is so corroded that the simple downstroke form cannot be used to distinguish between the two. However, the greater gap between the V and S indicates that this is of Innocent III. No analysis of the die is possible with this bulla, and the orientation of the obverse compared to reverse similarly cannot be established.
