Title |
Medieval papal bulla (Clement VI) |
||
Description |
English: A medieval lead Papal bulla of Pope Clement VI (1342-1352). On the obverse are Saint Peter and Saint Paul beneath an inscription reading SPA SPE, an abbreviation for St. Paul and St. Peter. St. Paul is on the left of the seal looking right, depicted with a long pointed beard. St. Peter is on the right facing left and has a rounded face with beard and hair formed of pellets. Both faces are contained within a beaded borders, possibly representing haloes, and separated from one another by a crozier. The obverse has a border of pellets. The reverse of the bulla contains the legend CLE/MENS/PP VI within a border of pellets with omega above the PP, and a pair of rosettes above, with a further rosette at the start of the legend, and a further pair flanking the lower line of the legend. The flowers are usual stops on bullae of Clement VI; also characteristic is the reverse-barred 'N'. 'PP' stands for 'Pastor Pastorum', translated as 'shepherd of the shepherds'. There is slight damage to the bottom edge to one side and indents at the top and bottom where a vertical hole runs through it which originally held the ribbon form the document (bull). This example measures 37.6 mm in diameter, 6.1 mm in thickness, and weighs 53.98 g. |
