Medieval papal bull of pope Gregory IX |
||
Description |
English: A lead papal bulla of pope Gregory IX, AD 1227-1241. The obverse bears the relief image of the inward-facing heads of St. Peter and St. Paul. The bearded heads of the two saints are contained within pellet borders and in the space between the two saints is a cross; a further pellet border marks the edge of the obverse. At the top of the obverse are the letters 'SPA SPE' ('Saint Paul' and 'Saint Peter'). The reverse of the bull also has a beaded outer border and bears the legend 'GRE/GORIVS/PP(omega above).VIIII.' ('Pope Gregory the ninth'). A central hole extends vertically through the bulla. The object measures 41mm in diameter, 5.4mm thick and weighs 53.09g. The surfaces are corroded. |
