Medieval papal bull of Pope Gregory IX
Description
English: A worn and corroded lead papal bulla of Gregory IX, AD 1227-1241. The obverse bears an image in relief of the inward-facing heads of St. Peter and St. Paul. The bearded heads of the two saints are contained within pellet borders; a further pellet border marks the edge of the obverse. At the top of the obverse are the letters: 'SP[A SPE]' - for St. Paul and St. Peter respectively. The reverse also has a beaded outer border and bears the letters: 'GRE/GORIVS./PP:VIII.' ('Pope Gregory the ninth'). A central cord hole passes vertically through the bulla. The object measures 37.2mm in diameter, 5.4mm thick and weighs 40.51g.
