Title |
Medieval papal bull fragment |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a lead papal bulla of medieval date. Just under half of the original object remains, the other portion having possibly been removed when the seal was opened. The obverse has, on the right hand side, the image of a bearded head facing forward. The lettering above reads: ....PE (for St. Peter). On the reverse the top row of letters is missing; the second row begins "A(possibly)N"; the third row begins with ".P". A beaded border surrounds the reverse lettering. The remaining letters on the reverse suggest that this may be a seal of Pope Alexander I-VI, in which case the date would be up to 1503AD. It measures 33.1mm in surviving diameter by 5.4mm thick and weighs 17.49g. |
