Title
Medieval papal bull (obverse and reverse).
Description
English: A much worn cast lead circular papal bulla. The front (recta) side of the bull depicts the faces of Saints Peter and Paul with a cross between them. Only Peter's face is visible on this example with 'SPA[SPE]' above it, this being an abbreviation for St. Paul and St. Peter. The remaining design is too worn to be visible. The reverse (verso) side of the bulla shows the name of the Pope, which is written in the nominative, with his abbreviated title (PP: Pastor Pastorum - Shepard of the Shepards) and ordinal number. Only a few letters are visible on this example '[ ]V[ ] / [ ]R / [ ]'. The papal bulla has a mid brown colour with an even patina. The papal bull measures 33.81mm long, 36.94mm wide and 5.06mm thick. It weighs 37.2g. Papal bulls were originally attached to documents issued by the Papacy. They date from the early 12th onwards, with the most common examples dating to the 14th century. Due to the wear on the recorded example the name of the Pope is not visible; therefore closer dating is not possible.
