Title
Medieval papal bull
Description
English: Half of a lead alloy Medieval papal bulla probably dating from AD 1254 - 1261.

It is probably a bulla of Pope Alexander IV (1254-1261). The seal is truncated vertically and half of the seal is missing. The obverse depicts the heads of St Peter and St Paul facing each other, with the surviving head being surrounded by a beaded border. The letters: SPE are visible above. The reverse lettering on three lines: A[LE]/XAN[DER]/PP[IIII] with an omega placed above the PP, which indicates that this abbreviation stands for 'Pastor Pastorum' or 'Shepherd of Shepherds'.

The internal cavity in which the string attaching the seal to the document would have sat is visible in the broken edge. The lead has a yellow patina and the moulding is very crisp.
