Title |
Medieval papal bull |
||
Description |
English: A lead seal, or bulla, from a papal document, in very good condition. It is flat and circular in shape with a diameter of 37mm and is 5mm thick. The inscription on the reverse of this bull is split into three lines and reads; MAR/TINVS/PPIIII. This inscription is surrounded by a border of oval dots and refers to Pope Martin IV who was Pope between 1281 and 1285. It is therefore likely that the bull was created and used between these dates. On the obverse of the bull are the letters SPA..PEX in a row across the top. The X appears to have been scratched on. Below this there are the heads of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, with the features of their faces clearly visible, facing and opposite each other. In between the Saints' heads there is a cross. Both the Saints' faces and the edge of the bull have borders of raised circular dots. |
