Title
Medieval papal bull
Description
English: A lead alloy papal bulla dating from the medieval period. The bulla is a sub-circular lead disc which is 36.7mm long, 33,3mm wide and 5.68mm thick. The obverse has three lines of writing reading : "MAR /TINVS / P(P) IIII". The reverse shows the busts of St Paul and St Peter with a cross between them and reads: "SPA SPE" above. Martin the fourth was Pope from 1281 to 1285. It has been suggested that he was actually only the second Pope to take the name Martin, but the thirteenth century clerks misread two earlier Popes called Marinvs as Martin and so called Martin "the fourth" in error. The bulla is dished and one side is damaged. There is no obvious mark of attachment to a document. The metal has a dark brown and white colouration. Papal bullae are not common finds, but there is still some doubt whether all the bullae that are found actually were issued by the Pope. It is possible some were contemporary forgeries. Illustrations of other Papal Bullae can be seen in "The Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue Volume 3" by Peter Saunders (2001).
