Title
Medieval papal bull. Drawing: Frank Basford
Description
English: Cast circular lead seal with a design on either side. Seal of Pope Gregory X (1271-1276). First side: Busts of St Peter and St Paul are each within an inverted pear shaped compartment defined by pellets. On the right, St Peter's beard and hair are shown to be curly by the use of pellets. On the left, St Paul's hair and beard are portrayed as being straight. Above the busts is an inscription SPASPE. A cross which is usually depicted between the busts has almost been totally obliterated, probably when the cord holding the bull to the bulla was removed (the left side of the horizontal arm of the cross is just visible). Second side: Inscription GRE/GORIVS/PP X. There is an omega above PP. A motif representing a crozier follows the X. Both sides of the bull have a circle of pellets around the periphery.
