Title |
Medieval page holder |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of copper-alloy trapezoidal plate from a Medieval page-holder, about one half surviving. The upper edge is concave. Decoration, consisting of perimeter, vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, is formed from double rows of tiny stamped impressions. These appear triangular, lozengiform and crescentic but would have been made with one tool.
Page holders are similar to tweezers but may have been used to hold several leaves of vellum together. They occur on both lay and ecclesiastical sites (Biddle 1990, 756). There is a marked bias in the distribution of Norfolk examples towards parishes with strong monastic associations: East Rudham, Great Dunham, Horsham St Faith, Pentney, West Acre, and Norwich. 13th or 14th century. |
