Title
Medieval padlock
Description
English: A Medieval barrel padlock. A cast copper alloy barrel padlock case of 12th or 13th century date. The case is a short round cylinder with a broken broad, flat, upright arm extending from the top at one end. The arm is pierced with a circular hole. At the other end, part of the bolt is still in situ. It has a circular end which is pushed into the barrel with another flat arm extending upwards, again, with a circular hole through it where it is broken. The case has worn key hole in the opposite end and through this some of the internal structure is visible. The padlock has a speckled green patina. The size of this padlock suggests that it was probably intended for use on a small casket or chest. Compare Egan 'The Medieval Household' (pp. 91-99, nos. 242-245), SWYOR-1E1325 and DENO-41B6B5.
