Title
Medieval padlock
Description
English:

A cast copper-alloy bolt and spring mechanism from a Medieval barb-spring padlock. It comprises an L-shaped arm with conical base from which extend horizontally two rectangular springs. Rising from the base is a vertical flat rectangular plate terminating in a cylindrical aperture with faceted exterior surfaces through which the hasp of the padlock would originaly have passed. The two springs are flat, rectangular in form and taper slightly to flattened ends that have central circular apertures. The surfaces of the object have extensive toolmarks. It measures 25.09mm in height, 31.58mm in length, 7.55mm in width/thickness, and weighs 7.28g.

This is the bolt and spring mechanism from a barb-spring padlock similar to Type C barrel padlocks from Winchester (Biddle, 1991: nos. 3665-3668). These suggest a Medieval date for the current example, perhaps in the 13th-15th centuries AD.
