Title |
Medieval padlock |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy bolt and spring mechanism from a Medieval barb-spring padlock. It comprises an L-shaped arm with cylindrical base from which extend horizontally two incomplete rectangular springs. Above the cylinder is a vertical flat rectangular plate terminating in a cylindrical aperture through which the hasp of the padlock would originaly have passed. The surfaces of the object have extensive toolmarks. It measures 22.70mm in length, 11.41mm in width, 8.57mm in thickness, and weighs 5.82g.
This is the bolt and spring mechanism from a barb-spring padlock similar to Type C barrel padlocks from Winchester (Biddle, 1991: nos. 3665-3668). These suggest a Medieval date for the current example, perhaps in the 13th-15th centuries AD. |
