Medieval padlock |

Description |
English: A copper alloy Medieval barrel padlock with a zoomorphic case. This is in the form of a four-legged animal with an extended neck, small ears and short front legs. The nose is flattened. The cylindrical body extends slightly beyond the rear legs and is hollow. The interior is obscured by soil but an internal bolt can be seen in this end. There is an opening of indeterminate shape in the front of the body below the neck, probably for entry of the bolt, although this may be the result of damage. There are two parallel incised lines across the centre of the body. Pellet eyes are placed between two horizontal lines on top of the head just below the ears.
A similar padlock from Winchester dated from the twelfth to thirteenth century (Goodall in Biddle 1990, p.1010, no. 3665). |
