Title
Medieval or Post Medieval candlestick socket (profile).
Description
English: A cast copper alloy candlestick socket. The socket is tubular and is circular in section, with straight sides. The rim is rounded with a slight lip on the interior edge. The base of the interior is an inverted hollow conical with a perforation at the base. This appears to be an intentional hole. The exterior of the socket is decorated with a pair of fine horizontal grooves at the approximate centre and a slight ridge towards the base. The base of the socket narrows, matching the interior, and is then broken. This break is not recent. The interior of the socket has no traces of wax or a wick. The surface of the socket has an under developed mid to dark green/grey patina. The socket measures 32.92mm tall, and 19.72mm diameter. It weighs 35.2g. The socket is from a Bunsen type, as described by Brownsword (Brownsword, R. 1985 English Latten Candlesticks 1400-1700 Finds Research Group Datasheet 1). This is probably a separate socket, not integral to the stem, and therefore tends to date to the late 15th and early 16th centuries (Brownsword; 1985).
