Title
Medieval or Post Medieval candlestick socket (plan).
Description
English: A cast copper alloy candlestick socket. The socket is tubular, sub ‘D’ shape in section due to damage, and has slightly obliquely angled sides. The upper rim is slightly abraded. The base of the interior is an inverted hollow conical. The exterior of the socket is decorated with fine horizontal ridges; a pair below the rim and a ridge at the base. Protruding and integral to the base of the socket is further moulding and the stem. At the tip there is a circular sectioned platform, which is the stem, and it has an integral collar above. This stem or stub as Brownsword (Brownsword, R. 1985 English Latten Candlesticks 1400-1700 Finds Research Group Datasheet 1) describes it, is complete and not broken. The surface of the socket has a dark green patina. The socket measures 44.51mm tall, and 25.46mm wide. It weighs 24g. The socket is from a Bunsen type (as described by Brownsword, Figure 4). This is a separate socket, not integral to the stem, and therefore tends to date to the late 15th and early 16th centuries (Brownsword).
